So, I cleaned all the images off of my iphone today, and I have to say, it's quite an interesting visual diary. This covers about 4 months of my life, from art to my wedding to my husband, to our holiday in the Virgin Islands to the production office and yes, a whole lot of NYC. Hope you enjoy looking at these photos as much as I enjoyed living them. And yes, there seems to be many a bar in this little collection. lol.

that I have married the most perfect man for me
that I have the most amazing family and friends a girl could ask for...
and that planning weddings 'ain't easy.' but after months of planning...
it was perfect.

Dating On a Budget

A friend and I were talking the other day about this recession and how it's affected peoples' dating lives due to the lack of funds...especially for men. How can you impress without spending mucho dinero? I know for me, it's not quantity, but it's quality...as in time spent together. Then again, I'm used to dating artists, so luckily, my dates with them have been creative...and wonderful. Here are some of my more frugal dating experiences along with my friends' suggestions. If your girl (or boy)doesn't dig these, then it's time to trade them in for a better deal. Materialism is never attractive.

If you live in NYC:

OUTSIDE DATES:

1. The Highline ($10): On a sunny day, bring your special person to The Highline nice and early and stake your claim on their decks...buy a couple of cupcakes and waters from the Cupcake man and bask in their sugary goodness as you cuddle up.

2. Central Park Boat Rental: Total cost for 3 hours ($50)
Before winter hits, grab a bottle of wine (Trader Joe's has a nice range of wines from $5-10) and head over to Central Park's boat house. Bring the romance on as you row with some wine and quiet time. The boat rentals are pretty reasonable

3. ($20-30) Picnic in central park: Bring some cheese, bread, water, wine... or buy some ice cream and cuddle under the sky. If you're really having to be frugal, then buy you and your significant other some ice creams and cuddle on a blanket.

4. (Free) concerts in Central Park (they happen all through summer). I just went to one last week.

5. (Free) school plays (inside or outside). This was one of my favorite dates. He took me to an middle school production of "Romeo & Juliet." I thought it was so sweet...and romantic. He really did his research for this date. It was at a park across from Spring Lounge and we had a couple drinks after and walked around.

INSIDE DATES:

1. ($10-30) cook dinner for her at your place. Food Network has many ideas for dinners within various budgets. Look up some recipes on Food Network... some of the ideas on 5 Ingredient Fix" are fun...and simple. Or charm her with a dish that reflects your heritage so that she can get to know you a little better. If you have a roommate, either arrange to have them clear out of the apt for a few hours or simply make the meal at her place (but bring the groceries and wine!)

2. (0-$20) Check out plays and musical performances at your local universities. For example, if you're in NYC, Juilliard has a fantastic schedule coming up.

3. (Free) If she likes art, take her to a gallery crawl in Chelsea. On various Thursday nights throughout season, all of the galleries have openings with free wine, beer, and food.

4. ($1-$20) Go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. You don't have to pay the full admission price; many people don't know that. Just say "Donation" and give whatever $ you want; save the extra cash for a couple of glasses of wine upstairs while you listen to chamber music in their cafe (usually on the weekends).

5. ($10-$20) Find a nice small romantic coffee shop with great desserts and/or independent bookstore that will allow you to browse and hunker down on a comfortable couch. (pick up their poetry reading schedules)

6. (Free) Check out poetry readings (KGB, a bar in the east village,has them regularly)

7. Movie Night @ Your place. Take turns getting to be the movie DJ. One night you pick 2 of your favorite movies and she/he picks his favorites the next time. Pop some popcorn and make it happen.

8. Indoor/Outdoor: Play sports together. Hiking, tennis, soccer (just don't kick my shins) and it's always fun to go to the golf range at Chelsea Piers and take turns swinging those clubs. You can get 90 balls for around $20.

9. Explore historical NYC (there are many guidebooks available in used and new bookstores). Check out your history.

10. Create art together.

a. ($20-$40) Buy a canvas or special art paper from your local art store with some paint (and grab a couple of bottles of that cheap wine from Trader Joe's) and go to town in your creativity. You'll be amazed at how fun...and romantic it can be to create together.

b. ($0-$30) Photo adventure. Break out your cameras and go on a photo adventure. Spend time photographing each other in various places in the city. Then edit your photos together. You can even make a collage to reflect your day.

*** Read "The Village Voice" or "Time Out" magazine for all the freebie art, theatre, and local happenings *** You'll be surprised at all the fun stuff you'll find. And then maybe, after he/she's passed the frugal test, you'll splurge on a nice meal, show, or event for that person.

Death of a Salesman

I just found out that Joe Ades, the British accented carrot and potato peeler salesman of Union Square Greenmarket has passed away! So sad! He was an icon of determination for me when I first arrived in NYC. Whenever I would begin feeling beaten down by this crazy city, I'd go watch Joe on a Saturday morning for some inspiration. Rain or snow, he'd be there selling his peelers in designer suits, bellowing the peeler's benefits in his strong British accent. He made the peelers sound like they could work magic and had large crowds around him constantly, many whom were smiling. Needless to say, he sold...and he sold well. He was a beacon of determination.

Take a moment to pay respect. A New York icon has passed. Well, a NYC icon to me.

I went to the New Museum downtown on the Bowery to check the Elizabeth Peyton show and found her color palette inspiring...She covers rockstars and hipster life well.

however, it was the Outsiders NY show that made me want to break out all of my art supplies and get to work. On the corner of Houston and the Bowery is an old shelled out building that houses work by international artists like JR, ANtony Micallef, Vhils, and several other talented artists organized by Banksy's dealer Steve Lazarides. Nice to see art that speaks to the mind and soul instead of just making a room pretty. The location in which the work is displayed is just absolutely perfect, as well. The building itself is art, raw and real. Go, ...and enjoy. It's up until Oct. 26th. Make sure you go downstairs.

This piece is actually carved out of the wall, using the drywall as the highlights in the face and the brick, etc...as the middle tones and shadows in this fine portrait. One of my favorites...

"A three-time Academy Award winner—for Special Achievement and for Visual Effects as the director of animation of the Walt Disney/Steven Spielberg blockbuster Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), and for his short film A Christmas Carol (1971)—Richard Williams discusses his long and influential career in a conversation with animation filmmaker and historian (and fellow Oscar-winner) John Canemaker. Born in Toronto in 1933, Williams became one of the finest animation filmmakers of the late twentieth century and has been a mentor to countless others. During the 1970s, his London-based studio created scores of stunningly crafted, award-winning commercials, titles, short films, and television specials. Not content with these successes, Williams then went on to hire veteran animators from the Disney studio's "Golden Age" and from Warner Bros. Cartoons, most notably Grim Natwick (Snow White), Art Babbitt (Fantasia), and Ken Harris (Bugs Bunny). Since the early 1990s, Catherine Opie has produced a complex body of photographic work, creating series of images that explore notions of communal, sexual, and cultural identity. From her early portraits of queer subcultures to her expansive urban landscapes, Opie has offered profound insights into the conditions in which communities form and the terms in which they are defined. All the while she has maintained a strict formal rigor, working in lush and provocative color as well as richly toned black and white. Influenced by social documentary photographers such as Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, and August Sander, Opie underscores and elevates the poignant yet unsettling veracity of her subjects.

Catherine Opie: American Photographer brings together nearly 200 of the artist's photographs in a major mid-career survey, offering the most comprehensive presentation of her work to date. Including works from the series Being and Having (1991); Portraits (1993-97); Freeways (1994-95); Houses (1995-96); Domestic (1995-98); Mini-malls (1997-98); Large-Format Polaroids (2000); Wall Street (2001); Icehouses (2001); Surfers (2003); Chicago (2004); and In and Around Home (2004-05), the exhibition will provide audiences with an unprecedented opportunity to examine the many interconnections between Opie's diverse bodies of work.

Teenage sniper Brenda Ann Spencer, explaining the 1979 shooting spree that left two dead and several injured, told a reporter: "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day." Luckily for us, Bryant Park's Summer Film Festival, which takes place every Monday through August 18, provides another avenue for relieving those end-of-the-weekend dolors. Tonight, catch the classic Bride of Frankenstein (1935), starring Boris Karloff as the Monster—who, along with his creator, Henry Frankenstein, has managed to survive the dramatic fire at the end of 1931's Frankenstein. Having given up reanimating the dead, Dr. Frankenstein is pulled back into the resurrection business when his old professor—the sinister Dr. Pretorius—kidnaps his wife and blackmails him into building a bride (famously played by Elsa Lanchester) for the sad, lonely Monster. You'll never see unrequited love quite like this again. Lawn opens at 5 for blankets and picnicking, film starts at sunset.

Draw-A-Thon: Where You Can Draw 'Til Your Heart's Content.

There's a place where you can go draw nudes for hours...and under $100. The Draw-A-Thon. It's not for the faint of heart or the conservative, however. Michael Alan has just received a grant for his infamous Draw-A-Thon and you can now pay just $10 for 10 models in a 3000sqft place. Here's the info:

Although, it's not really new. It's been there for almost 10 years or so, apparently. Everything I tasted here was delicious. And the pâté was the best I've ever had, hands down. Superb restaurant and suberb staff. Definitely a must on your culinary list of to do's in NYC.

A Finnish friend o' mine suggested this show at Ps1. I'm definitely checking this out when the Finnish bands Jimi Tenor and Op:1 Bastards are playing on August 23rd. See below for the write-up on the Ps1.org website.

P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center presents Arctic Hysteria: New Art from Finland, an intergenerational and interdisciplinary exhibition featuring 16 Finnish artists, that will introduce New York audiences to outlandish visions of aliens, utopias, animals, and psychedelia. Arctic Hysteria will be on view in the First Floor Galleries, Café, and Boiler Room from June 1, 2008 through September 15, 2008. In conjunction, Warm Up will present two major Finnish bands Jimi Tenor and Op:l Bastards on August 23. On September 15, The Museum of Modern Art will present a special screening of Electric Forest, a compilation of historical and contemporary Finnish video works.

RIP Color Infrared Film

I recently plotted my next adventure in wonderland (aka B&H) by reviewing their website for goodies when I screamed out loud in horror. My wonderland has faded...they no longer carry Kodak Ektachrome Professional Infrared EIR Color Slide Film. My favorite film is no longer. Kodak has stopped producing it! WHAT THE....So, now the 2 rolls in my refrigerator have become my most prized possessions. See photos below to witness the magic my camera has captured with infrared. Sigh.

Loving The Met Right Now...

Not that I don't always love the Met. It's my place of solitude and inspiration. However, they really have a fine set of shows currently. The one I'm most partial to and the one that set me into a flurry of ecstatic giggles is "Framing a Century: Master Photographers, 1840–1940"-namely because, yes, I am a photographer. Also because it reminds me of what a magical place the darkroom is...and how sad I am that a fair amount of "photographers" don't even know or understand what that experience is like. I don't understand how you can even call yourself a photographer unless you have worked in a darkroom, spent endless glorious hours splashing around in those chemicals, making magic and spontaneous miracles happen...

But as a digress, another show I was inexplicably taken aback by was the J.M.W Turner exhibition. It's rather extensive and quite glorious. I was never really a huge fan of his work until how. His use of color and light kept me fixed to that bench in the middle of the room for long periods of time. Yes, I actually took time to sit down.

Go see both shows...and even the Superhero one if you like...

Then I've got something rather cool for you...At a magical place, near Kips Bay, on the pier at Solar One (23rd Street & the East River), Rooftop Films in presenting a night of food, drinks, live music, a fantastic fireworks view, and explosive political films. They tote it as a "a mix of the wacky and weighty" in America. Should be quite interesting...and educational. Fair warning, though, ...you must be there by 6:00pm or before; otherwise the NYPD will not let you past the barricade.

Dali: Painting and Film Exhibition at the Moma, June 29-September 15th

Beginning June 29th, the Moma will be bringing together more than 100 major paintings, photographs, drawings and films to explore the central role of cinema in Dali's work as both inspiration and an outlet for experimentation. His collaborations have included film bigwigs, Luis Bunuel, Walt Disney (who knew ???), Alfred Hitchcock, and the Marx Brothers. Go check it out. One can never have enough surrealism in one's life...and one certainly can never be exposed to Salvatore Dali's work enough. Just when you think you know everything about him, something new surfaces. Good times.

Quick Green Living Tips for the Home

I live in NYC. And I live in an old building. This means that about 5 seconds after I've cleaned my apt oh-so-thoroughly, a new layer of unknown dark substance begins its descent upon my furniture. I like clean. It makes me happy, so the wipedown happens often...and because Clorox and Windex are so very toxic, I've begun cleaning with "green" products like baking soda, vinegar, and my very favorite: lemon juice. Smells good, tastes good, and can do just about everything.

Lemon tips:

Ant deterrent

Pouring lemon juice around areas that ants frequent is said to repel them.

Air freshener

An equal amount of lemon juice and water added to an atomizer will create a wonderful synthetic chemical-free green air freshener for your home.

All purpose cleaner

Again, an equal amount of lemon juice and water added to a spray bottle is an effective kitchen and bathroom cleaner and can also be used on walls (spot test first).

A small amount of lemon juice can also be added to vinegar based cleaning solutions to help neutralize the smell of the vinegar.

Microwave

Heat a bowl of water and lemon slices in your microwave for 30 seconds to a minute; then wipe out the oven. Stains will be easier to remove and old food odors neutralized.

Fridge

Half a lemon stored in your fridge will help control and eliminate unpleasant smells.

Chrome/copper/brass

Rub a lemon juice and baking soda paste onto chrome or copper, rinse and then wipe/buff with a soft cloth or paper towel.

Toilet

Mix 1/2 cup borax and a cup of lemon juice for a powerful toilet cleaner that will leave it smelling extra clean!

Lime scale

Use a half lemon to clean the lime scale off a sink or taps/faucets; rinse well.

Laundry

For bleaching purposes, add 1/2 cup of lemon juice to the rinse cycle and hang clothes outside to dry.

A teaspoon of lemon juice thrown into your wash can also help your clothes to smell fresher.

Dishes

A teaspoon of lemon juice added to your dishwashing detergent can help boost grease cutting power

Drains

Hot lemon juice and baking soda is a good drain cleaner that is safe to use in septic systems.

If you have a garbage disposal unit, throw in some lemon peel from time to time while it's working in order to keep it smelling fresh.

Chopping boards

Rub lemon juice into your wooden chopping board, leave overnight and then rinse. Wood chopping boards appear to have anti-bacterial properties anyway, but the lemon will help kill off any remaining nasties and neutralize odors.

Glass and mirrors

4 tablespoons of lemon juice mixed with half a gallon of water makes an effective window cleaner

Degreaser

Straight lemon juice can be used as a general degreaser

Furniture

2 parts olive oil or cooking oil mixed with 1 part lemon juice makes for an excellent furniture polish!

Cuts, stings and itches

A small amount of lemon juice pour onto minor wounds can help stop bleeding and disinfect the injury (it will sting a bit). Lemon juice applied to itches, poison ivy rashes and wasp stings is said to relieve discomfort.

Mouthwash

A 50/50 mixture of lemon juice and water makes for an effective mouthwash.

Hands

The smell of fish can linger on your hands, even after scrubbing with soap - rubbing your hands with lemon juice will neutralize the smell and leave your hands smelling wonderful. It will also neutralize the small of garlic and onions on your hands.

Catholic imagery engages this new collection in a mass of visual dialog. Fenix’s recent painting, “A Note to All Indigenous Peoples Everywhere”, can be viewed as a “reaction to the sanitation and colonization of native people everywhere, being ‘saved’ by the church is a synonym for native cultures introduction to disease, slavery and reform,” explains Fenix.
